KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

Learn about the Essential Standards for our Kindergarten students.

KINDERGARTEN ESSENTIAL STANDARDS

ELA

I CAN….

  • name all upper and lower case letters.
  • say the sound of each letter (consonant)
  • say the short and long sound of each vowel
  • identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words
  • make the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words
  • make new words by changing consonant and vowel sounds
  • read common sight words
  • find spaces between words
  • read the words in a book in the right order
  • read books at my level
  • talk about the characters, setting, and some details of the story
  • print upper and lower case letters
  • spell simple words(CVC) by using letters and sounds I know
  • say a full sentence with details
  • use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and when using I
  • recognize and name end punctuation
  • listen to a story and draw my idea
  • listen to a story and tell someone my idea
  • listen to a story and write to tell my idea
  • know that some words have two meanings and I can tell you which one to use. (e.g.,knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck).
  • describe something using words
  • use new words and phrases that I learned at school

MUSIC

I CAN…

  • play a steady beat
  • sing and play music from a variety of styles and cultures
  • start and end a song together with my teacher
  • feel/express music with my entire body
  • sit and listen to music or a performance/presentation

PE/Health

I CAN…

  • hop, gallop, jog, and slide using a mature pattern
  • catch a self-tossed or well-thrown large ball with hands
  • work independently and safely in physical education

MATH

I CAN…..

  • count to 100 by ones
  • count to 100 by 10’s
  • count forward from any given number
  • write numbers from 0-20
  • write a number for a set of objects
  • point to each object as I count it
  • count up to 20 objects in any arrangement. (10 in a scattered arrangement)
  • count out objects up to 20 when given a number
  • identify which group is greater than, less than or equal to by matching and counting
  • compare two written numerals between 1-10
  • solve a problem when I add two numerals together
  • solve a problem when I take a numeral away
  • solve a problem by putting two numerals together
  • solve a problem by breaking one number into two smaller numbers
  • add and subtract numbers up to 5
  • compare two numbers between 1-10 presented as written numerals

SEL

I CAN...

  • demonstrate an awareness of my emotions
  • identify and manage my emotions and behavior constructively
  • demonstrate consideration for others and a desire to contribute positively
  • develop and maintain positive relationships

ART

I CAN…

  • explain that art has been made throughout our history by people all around the world
  • use the elements of art to create personal expression and emotion in art
