SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM

ESSENTIAL STANDARDS

ELA

I CAN…

  • recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words
  • read 2nd grade sight words
  • read long and short vowels
  • ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text
  • write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure
  • capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names
  • know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently
  • read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

MUSIC

I CAN…

  • sing beautifully, and show melody with my movement
  • play in rhythm quarter, eighth and half notes and rests
  • write out a song using my own symbols
  • sit and respond appropriately to music and performances

ART

I CAN…

  • revise my artwork and mount the work of art to make a complete art presentation
  • visual recognize how artists create and construct multiple solutions to visual art problems
  • engage in discussion of the subject matter of artwork and how it relates to cultures during specific times

MATH

I CAN…

  • represent and solve problems involving addition and subtractions
  • add and subtract within 1000 using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value
  • add and subtract within 20
  • understand place value with three digit numbers
  • read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten
  • mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to given number 

SEL

I CAN...

  • demonstrate an awareness of my emotions
  • identify and manage my emotions and behavior constructively
  • demonstrate consideration for others and a desire to contribute positively
  • develop and maintain positive relationships

PE/Health

I CAN….

  • hop
  • gallop
  • jog
  • slide
  • skip
  • drop a ball & catch it with my hands
  • catch a soft object before it bounces
  • catch balls of different sizes
  • catch a well-thrown large ball with my hands
  • work safely & by myself in physical education
